"Nanook as a Volunteer"

As Nanook began his life, we knew he was distend for greater things.

We knew Nanook had the love and comfort of People in his soul, so renowned for a Alaskan Malamute, so this is where we ventured.

And hence our adventures began to see what we could do to share our baby Nanook with the world and see what we could do to make, if only for a few minutes, Their day, Their Week, Their Lives, of people he would meet,  just that little bit better and brighter.

The only payment required, was a Pat, a Cuddle, or just a simple Smile.

So, Lets get to work and create some Memories >>>

When Nanook became our love and joy of the house hold and loved going everywhere with us, it was time to share him with the world.

I Mid 2015 i had seen a story on the Delta Therapy Dog program and though these dogs and their handlers where doing a great thing for the community, and looking for no payment, but just love , pats and cuddles.

In late 2015 we attended an assessment day with the Delta Society, to see if both Nanook and i had wat it took to become a Therapy Dog Team.

It was a very nervous experience, purely because it was something we had never done before, but also, that i / we wanted to do well and hope to pass.

Stage 1 of the assessment went well and we were able to progress to a more in-depth assessment, as in one on one.

All went well, till there was a group of young children walking past. As you know, Nanook was a bit of an eye catcher, and hence , they asked if they could pat Nanook, i looked to the assessors to make sure this was ok, and true to Nanooks form, he had just made 4 new friends.

Needless to say, both Nanook and i were able to pass the assessment, and our journey had begun as a Delta Pet Therapy Team.

For nearly 5 years were we able to visit our Local aged care facility and commenced building some very strong bonds with some of the Residents. A truly memorable experience for Both Nanook and i think the residents too.

Not long after commencing at the Aged Care unit, there was also and opening for an additional Delta Therapy Team for the Queensland Childrens Hospital.

After a very short deliberation, we accepted this role also.

Over the years we attended many Delta Society events such as - Fundraising and Awareness events at Shopping centers, Paws the Pressure event at the SunSuper Call center and other fundraising days.

Being a Delta Therapy Dog team was not just about been able to take Nanook to locations where the average pup does not get to go, but its about making the differences in peoples lives that are needing a very strong "cheer me up" !!  the Therapy dogs help in the healing process of children or adults that are sick and ill. They also help fill that gap for the aged people that are not able to have the furfriends with them in hospital.

I know that our visits maybe short, but to the Residents and the Children and their families , but also the staff as well, this meeting and greeting is so much more to them.

So for Nanook and I , this journey was so well the hard dedication and work that we had both put in to help improve the lives of so so many.

My journey has not stopped with the Delta Society, i will continue to try and have our new pups assessed to see if they have what is required to become our next generation of Delta Therapy Dogs

As a tribute to the work Nanook undertook at the Queensland Childrens Hospital in Brisbane, the Queensland Health engaged a local artist to doing a Painting of Nanook and now sits proudly on Level 2 of the Childrens Hospital to remind all of the great work that all the Therapy dogs do at the Hospital.

even tho they are not Doctors or Nurses, these Therapy Dogs do make a difference in the healing of people and their families,

The foundation would not be able to support these children or fund research with out your kind donations.

Nanook and I were not just Volunteers for the Delta Therapy Dog Team, but we were also part of the Childrens Hospital Foundation Volunteer Team

In early 2016, Nanook and I commenced our shifts on Thursday nights. Every week for nearly 5 years , we joined the Team at the hospital and after a daily brief, we were assigned a fellow Green short Volunteer to help escort us around the many wards within the hospital.

Our first port of call was always the Nurses station to check in , and yes, Nanook was a bit of a hit for all that met him.

I have been so so lucky to be able to witness the true magic that Nanook, and the fellow CHF volunteers were able to achieve while they Volunteered their time to come and spend time with these children and sometimes their families.

The foundation was able to support all of these volunteers with Toys, Games, Books, and so many crafts, it was a true pleasure to see the smiles on these kids faces.

The Childrens Hospital Foundation is truly a remarkable organisation that brings hope, joy and lots of research to the children of the hospital and the greater Australia.

I have so so many stories to tell, but sorry to say , these are my stories, and the stories of the children.

You can read more in the "Your Story" page.

Nanook and i were able to provide a service to all of these people, and all that was required in return was, a smile, a pat, and if lucky a cuddle - all for Nanook mind you.

During our years of service, were also helped out in many events, from The Channel Nine Childrens Hospital Foundation Telethon, Christmas morning for 4 years in a row, Easter ( yum, Love chocolate) and even the likes of the Christmas Carols.

All in all, the Childrens Hospital Foundation supports all the childrens and families that pass through the doors of the hospital, but also after they leave. They are all amazing at what they do, and  i cant recommend Volunteering for them if you go the chance.
